BotoxIt would be wonderful if we could have young looking skin all of our lives, but elements such as the wind and sunlight, coupled with the natural process of aging take a toll on our skin - especially on our face.

    More Botox Info

Our once smooth facial expression, now display deep creases and wrinkles in our brow and between and at the corners of our eyes, making us look older than we are or feel. If you have tried every over-the-counter cream and lotion on the market and nothing has worked to erase those bothersome creases and wrinkles on your face, then come in and talk with Dr. Celia Mendes to see if BOTOX® Cosmetic might be right for you.

    Procedure

Botox® Cosmetic (or its pharmacological name onabotulinumtoxinA) is a botulinum toxin used to block nerve impulses to the muscles. The reduced muscle activity diminishes severe to moderate wrinkles and creases in the brow and the wrinkling that occurs around the eye (crow’s feet). Botox® Cosmetic is administered through a series of injections. Most of Dr. Mendes’ patients report little discomfort during treatment, comparing the sensation to a pin prick. The procedure for administering is simple. First Dr. Mendes determines where to administer the injections by examining your ability to move certain muscles in your brow area. Next, though no anesthesia is required, Dr. Mendes may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. Dr. Mendes marks the areas to be injected, and the injections are given.

The recovery from your treatment is practically immediate. The vast majority of Dr. Mendes’ patients go from their Botox® Cosmetic treatments right back to their normal activities. Your Botox® Cosmetic treatment can even be performed during your lunch break. All of Dr. Mendes’ Botox® Cosmetic patients see an improvement in their appearance after their treatment. Many see amazing results that a last up to three months.

If the wrinkles and furrows make your face appear older then you are or feel, Dr. Celia Mendes invites you to email her or call her at (910) 644-6353. Dr. Mendes can help you decide whether your face could benefit from a treatment with Botox®. Make an appointment today. Come in, talk to Dr. Mendes. You may discover there can be a better you.

But only PicoSure Focus with Skin Cell Activation uses pressure to deliver impressive results without the pain, discomfort and downtime of other procedures.

How does PicoSure® Focus treatments work?

PicoSure Focus with Skin Cell Activation treatments treat acne scars and blemishes, hyperpigmentation and photodamage, pigmented lesions, age spots, and fine lines and wrinkles, while at the same time stimulating new collagen and elastin production leading to improved skin texture and younger-looking skin.

Focus treatments with the PicoSure laser activates your body’s natural skin cell processes for healthy, more youthful-looking skin. Only Focus treatments lighten unwanted pigment and uniquely stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin –the keys to younger-looking skin—without the pain or downtime of other laser treatments. Skin Cell Activation initiates dermal remodeling, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and acne scars. High and low intensity energy lightens the unwanted pigment such as freckles and age spots.

What to expect with PicoSure® Focus treatments?

The treatment time is convenient, lasting only 10-15 minutes. You may experience a mild redness for a 1-3 hours, versus 2-6 days of downtime with other laser procedures. Therefore, there is no need to cover up or miss work or leisure activities.

IPL Skin RejuvenationTreats skin care concerns ranging from light acne scars, redness, and rosacea to broken capillaries and hyper pigmentation.

    More PicoSure® Skin Revitalization Info

Dr. Mendes indicates that most patients will require several treatments of the IPL Photo Rejuvenation to achieve maximum results. Over time Dr. Mendes finds that her patients see marked improvement in their skin.

    Down Time?

There is no down time with the treatments. A patient can go back to his/her daily routine after their treatments. Because of this , many patients see this as a “lunch time” activity.

During your consultation with Dr. Mendes she will prescribe the number of treatments she feels you will need to obtain the results you desire.

Fraxel®Fraxel light energy stimulates your skin’s natural collagen, and resurfaces the top skin layer by rejuvenating skin cells below the surface to help smooth the creases and pockets that cause wrinkles and scars.

    More Fraxel® Info

Most of us wish we could slow down the effects of aging and what it does to our looks. Fraxel® is a proven laser technology that can help reverse the visible signs of aging, naturally helping you look younger. Change isn’t drastic or scary with Fraxel, it’s just a younger-looking you. Fraxel is effective on fine and deeper lines and wrinkles, surface scarring (erasing effects of acne and other scarring), pigmentation (minimizing the appearance of age spots), sun damage, and Actinic Keratosis (a common precancerous condition). With over a decade of treatments, Fraxel technology is proven science that gets real results.

    How it Works

Fraxel® is fractional laser technology for advanced skin resurfacing. Dr. Mendes uses a “smart scanning” hand piece to ensure consistency and safety while fractional lasers penetrate the top skin layers. Fraxel light energy stimulates your skin’s natural collagen, and resurfaces the top skin layer by rejuvenating skin cells below the surface to help smooth the creases and pockets that cause wrinkles and scars. Fraxel only treats the problem areas, therefore the results are focused and effective. This treatment usually lasts between 15 – 45 minutes. Because Fraxel works with your body’s natural skin cells, results typically take 1 to 3 weeks to take effect. Most patients report the sensation of a “light sunburn” immediately after treatment, but treatment plans can vary. Dr. Mendes will help decide the specifics of your treatment with you. Call (910) 644-6353 and schedule today for a quick treatment for a younger-looking, radiant you!

ThreeForMeA two step laser treatment procedure that focuses on three of the most common skin problems: wrinkles, sun damage, and facial veins.

    More ThreeForMe Info

The ThreeForMe treatment is performed in 2 steps.

Step 1 – For sun damage and facial veins

The first step treats discoloration and facial vessels using a technology called Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL. This can address unwanted sun damage including freckles, brown spots or age spots, and unsightly veins including broken blood vessels, facial veins and rosacea.

Step 2 – For fine lines and wrinkles

The second step uses laser technology to generate collagen and elastin – keys to the support structure of our skin. This results in the improvement of fine lines, wrinkles, scars and other surface imperfections.

Laser Hair RemovalUsing the latest technology, Dr. Celia Mendes is able to remove and/or modify those unwanted hairs. This will hopefully ensure that you will never need to shave, or use other depilatory devices, again.

    More Laser Hair Removal Info

Until now, the only options for removing unwanted hair were shaving, waxing, hair-removal creams, tweezing or electrolysis, and these are all temporary and/or painful. In the 1980s a Russian physicist, while developing the Ruby laser for defense purposes, accidentally lasered himself on the arm. He noticed that the hairs in the lasered area were vaporized, and new hair growth occurred only after a number of months. As a result of this accident, laser hair removal was born. This technique is good for bikini lines, underarms, face, legs, back and most other skin surfaces.

The laser light targets hair in the active growth cycle, damaging the hair follicle with minimum trauma to surrounding tissue. (Approximately 20-30% of the hair will be active at any one time so additional treatments may be necessary). Effects of this treatment vary with skin type, hair color, and the area of the body to be treated. Because the laser only detects color, people who are very fair skinned and have dark hair in the treatment area usually obtain the best results.

This treatment is usually not effective on natural blonde, gray, white or red hair. Although the goal is hair removal, sometimes only modifications are made. For example, coarse hair may be replaced with finer, lighter hair. Some conditions may exclude clients from treatment.

During you consultation with Dr. Mendes she will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for laser hair reduction and/or modification.

During a consultation visit, Dr. Mendes will examine the areas to be treated and make an assessment of skin type and hair color. The client’s medical history and objectives will also be discussed. For persons with darker skin tones, a “test spot” may be recommended.

Results of laser treatment will not necessarily be immediate. For hair removal, the hair shaft will fall out in about two weeks. Since 20-30% of hair that is present is in its active phase. The re-growth of dormant hair will necessitate additional treatments. Clients return when there is evidence of new hair growth. In facial areas, this growth usually appears after four weeks. Hair growth in other parts of the body can be visible in six to eight weeks.

If you have been considering a more permanent method of reducing or removing facial or body hair, we recommend you contact Dr. Celia Mendes to determine if this is the answer for you. Call (910) 644-6353 today.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)Don’t sweat the small stuff or big stuff anymore by treating bothersome sweating. Dr. Celia Mendes offers a couple options to treat excessive underarm sweating also known as hyperhidrosis.

    More Hyperhidrosis Info

Our bodies produce sweat to help cool us down when we are overheated. Underarm sweating is produced through two types of sweat glands just below the skin’s surface. The eccrine glands secrete a clear, odorless fluid to help cool the body. The apocrine glands produce a thicker fluid that give underarm sweat its distinctive odor. Some people have overactive sweat glands and may sweat more than others. This is not unusual for most people, but it can just be bothersome for some.

    Laser Hair Removal Underarm Treatment

One treatment option to treat excessive underarm sweat is Laser Hair Removal using the ICON laser machine by Cynosure. This treatment option is non-invasive. Through a series of 4-6 treatments one month apart, laser hair removal can decrease sweating while also benefiting from permanent hair reduction in the underarm area.

    PrecisionTx Axillary Gland Ablation Treatment

Another treatment option we offer is PrecisionTx Axillary Gland Ablation. Precision Tx is performed by Dr. Mendes in-office. It is minimally invasive with minimal downtime. PrecisonTx targets the axillary glands under the arm by delivering laser energy under the skin to ablate and coagulate soft tissue. This one-time treatment offers minimal downtime and has delivered results with high patient satisfaction.

    How does it work?

PrecisionTx is a minimally invasive procedure performed by Dr. Mendes to treat and ablate tissue in areas such as the underarms. Through a small incision a very thin tube containing the PrecisonTx laser fiber is inserted and delivers thermal energy directly to the treatment area. For most people results are achieved in just one treatment. It is very important to follow all pre and post-op instructions to achieve optimal results.

How do I know if I sweat too much?

If you answer yes to any of the following, one of our treatment options may be right for you.

    • Does your underarm sweat make you feel embarrassed?
    • Does underarm sweat interfere with your daily activities?
    • Do you frequently apply antiperspirant?
    • Do you worry someone will notice your sweat stains?
    • Do you change your clothes more than once a day due to underarm sweat?
    • Do you wear fabrics, colors and styles of clothes that do not show sweat easily?
    • Are you frustrated over constantly ruining clothes?

Feel better and less self-conscious about bothersome sweating. Call or text us at (910) 644-6353 to schedule your free consultation today and see which treatment option works best for you.

PicoSure® Tattoo RemovalReady to lose that tattoo? Do it better and faster with PicoSure®. PicoSure is the world’s first picosecond laser and the only advanced tattoo removal laser with PressureWave™ technology, which works with your body to remove unwanted ink.

    More PicoSure® Tattoo Removal Info

How does PicoSure® with PressureWave™ work?

PicoSure delivers laser energy that specifically targets tattoo ink, resulting in the successful shattering of just the ink particles without harming the surrounding tissue. PicoSure works effectively on multicolored tattoos (including reds, blues, and greens), hard-to-remove black ink, and stubborn, previously treated tattoos. Best of all, PicoSure tattoo removal often requires fewer treatments than traditional laser tattoo removal.

During the treatment with PicoSure, ultra-short (trillionths of a second) pulses target ink particles with PressureWave technology. Unlike traditional tattoo lasers, which rely on heat to destroy tattoo ink, PicoSure delivers a photomechanical impact called PressureWave. PressureWave technology is a pressure so powerful that the ink shatters into tiny dust-like particles. These microscopic particles are more rapidly absorbed and eliminated naturally by the body.

What to expect with PicoSure® Tattoo Removal

With PicoSure tattoo removal expect fast treatment times, typically 10 minutes. MonaLisa Touch®A new and exciting vaginal rejuvenation laser treatment. If you suffer with symptoms such as vaginal dryness, irritation, laxity, burning, pain during sexual intercourse, or mild urinary urgency or incontinence, this treatment can change your life.

    More MonaLisa Touch® Info

MonaLisa Touch® is a simple and safe non-surgical approach to gynecological health that is performed in the office. It treats the symptoms of vaginal health by generating new collagen, elastin and vascularization of the vaginal mucosa using a gentle fractional CO2 laser with a vaginal probe. With 3 less than 5 minute treatments every 6 weeks, this virtually painless procedure is clinically proven to bring lasting relief with overwhelming positive and immediate results.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THIS TREATMENT?

MonaLisa Touch® allows for a functional restoration of the vagina (Vaginal Laser Rejuvenation), which helps fighting and attenuating symptoms related to vaginal atrophy, a widespread problem among pre and postmenopausal women. Thanks to its action on factors that determine dryness, fragility and loss of mucosal elasticity, this treatment can eliminate troublesome itching, irritation and pain, which become particularly acute during intercourse. The interaction with laser is, in fact, the ideal method to stimulate the collagen contained in the vaginal walls for the rehydration and functional tissue restoration. Its beneficial action can contribute to improve self-confidence and sexual pleasure.

FOR WHICH WOMEN IS MONALISA TOUCH® LASER TREATMENT MOST SUITABLE?

For any woman who wants to prevent or treat the vaginal symptoms due to estrogenic decrease (in menopause, after a childbirth, after a cancer treatment, or after an eating disturb –anorexia) . Most common symptoms vaginal dryness, irritation, laxity, burning, pain during sexual intercourse and mild urinary urgency or incontinence. MonaLisa Touch® is the ideal treatment for those who are looking for a less invasive procedure. Talk with one of our providers to see if this procedure is right for you.

WHAT TYPE OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

Most treated patients report a reduction in dryness, burning sensation, pain during intercourse, and urinary symptoms which contributes to a substantial improvement in the quality of life. These results are possible, thanks to the stimulation of the mucosa, which regenerates and rejuvenates.

CAN MONALISA TOUCH® BE USED TO TREAT VAGINAL LAXITY?

The term “loose vagina” refers to a condition where the diameter of the vagina has increased. This is often caused by natural yet traumatic events, such as giving birth or tissue relaxation due to a natural ageing process. In these cases, it is essential to evaluate the cause and the state of the vagina to exclude a prolapse or an involvement of the muscles. The CO2 fractional laser allows treating those cases where the “loose vagina” is due to a mucosal tone loss.

    IS IT PAINFUL?

No, it is virtually painless. No anesthesia is required. The sensation is a light vibration.

    HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?

It depends on how serious the symptoms are. It is recommended to get 3 treatments, 6 weeks apart, followed by an annual maintenance treatment. In any case, it will be up to the provider, after careful examination, to evaluate and recommend the best treatment plan for you.

Mommy MakeoverA personalized set of cosmetic procedures designed to help a women address common effects of childbearing and aging on the face, breasts, and body and restore or improve upon her pre-pregnancy appearance.

More Mommy Makeover Info

Having kids changes a woman's body, and things don't always go back to the way they were before. A skilled cosmetic surgeon can help address the effects of childbearing, restoring a woman's pre-baby shape or even improving upon it through personalized procedures for the breasts and body.

How can a mommy makeover benefit me?

Pregnancy can leave lasting—and often unwanted—effects on your appearance, such as sagging breasts, stretched abdominal muscles, and loose, excess skin. Many women are discouraged when their breasts and body do not return to their pre-pregnancy shape, even with a healthy diet and exercise. By addressing unwanted changes of pregnancy and restoring the appearance you desire, a mommy makeover can help you feel more like yourself, improving your comfort and self-confidence.

  • Correct sagging and restore volume to breasts
  • Improve breast symmetry
  • Repair stretched or large nipple/areola
  • Remove excess, sagging skin from the abdomen
  • Repair stretched or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Reduce pockets of diet- and exercise-resistant fat
  • Improve the way clothing and swimsuits fit

When should I have a mommy makeover?

Determining the right time for a mommy makeover is largely a personal decision between you and your cosmetic surgeon; however, there are certain factors to consider when timing a mommy makeover and choosing the procedures you will have.

  • You must be fully recovered from childbirth before undergoing surgery.
  • If you are considering breast surgery, you should wait until several months after you are finished breastfeeding to allow the breasts to return to a stable size and shape.
  • Certain non-surgical treatments, such as injectables, may not be recommended while you are still breastfeeding.
  • Typically, it is best to wait until you are finished having children before undergoing surgical “lifting” procedures, such as tummy tuck, breast lift, or lower body lift surgery; if you plan to become pregnant again in the future, non-surgical body contouring and skin treatments can be cost-effective options for interim treatments.
  • If you are having a surgical mommy makeover, you will not be allowed to lift anything over 5-10 lbs. for the first few weeks after surgery; you will need help with childcare during this time, especially if you have younger children.

Hi Def LiposuctionA new ultrasound liposuction procedure that takes traditional lipo to the next level. Just like with regular lipo, HD removes fat strategically from some places in the body, to show off the natural structure beneath.

More Hi Def Lipo Info

This procedure uses a device that liquefies the fat cells before removing them from the body. The surgeon also applies tumescent fluid to the area, which helps break down the fat even more and also sedates the location.

When the fat is totally broken down, the surgeon uses suction to remove it from the body completely. This method can be used on almost any body part, such as the arms, chest, shoulders, abs, buttocks, and inner thighs. HD lipo sculpts the body to the perfect natural shape, removing fat from select areas and, if necessary, re-injecting the fat into other areas for the best possible contours.

If you're already healthy, but struggling to get those last layers of fat out of the way for a defined appearance, HD lipo is right for you.

Face & NeckEye & Brow Lift, Facial Fat Transfer, Lip Augmentation, and Neck & Jowl Sculpting.

Face & Neck Procedures

Eye & Brow LiftTypically a 1-hour out-patient procedure where the surgeon makes precise incisions and removes excess upper eyelid and/or lower eyelid skin and fat pads as indicated.

More Eye & Brow Lift Info

Facial features are what usually reveal our age. The brow and forehead are often the first facial areas to show the inevitable signs of aging. Even as young as our 30’s, sun damage, loss of skin elasticity, and sheer gravity can cause undesirable wrinkles. Sagging, drooping eyelids, hollow under eyes and wrinkles can make you look tired, aged, or upset even when you are not.

Sometimes an upper or lower eye lift procedure, commonly known as a blepharoplasty, can make a significant improvement on your facial appearance. Local anesthesia and light sedation are commonly used, and the recovery time is typically about one week. The results are commonly brighter, more youthful appearing eyes.

Other treatments commonly performed to enhance eyelid surgery results include Botox or Xeomin, chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, fat transfer, and a brow lift.

Another option for an eye lift is a non-excisional, non-surgical approach using AccuTite. AccuTite uses RFAL (RadioFrequency Assisted Lipolysis, tightening and contouring the skin.

Facial Fat TransferA highly successful procedure we use for cheek, brow and lip augmentation and overall facial improvement.

More Facial Fat Transfer Info

Our face is often the most distinguishing part of us; what sets us apart from every other person on earth. Enhancing the natural beauty of the face and creating a youthful appearance is the purpose of facial cosmetic surgery. Whether by aging or simply structural changes over time, a person’s unique facial composition can obtain an appearance that is unsatisfying to them. As we age, the facial volume decreases over time in all areas of the face; slight in some, and quite a lot in others. How people perceive us when they see our face is outside of our control, as many of us have no way to change those facial features on our own. The overall deflation of the face contributes significantly to the aged look. Adding volume is key to creating a naturally youthful appearance.

Fat transfer, otherwise known as facial fat grafting, is a highly successful procedure we use for cheek, brow and lip augmentation and overall facial improvement. Fat transfer achieves subtle but impressive facial rejuvenation. The fat transferred is your own, therefore the results look and feel natural, and restore youthful quality to your face.

There should be little to no pain with the fat transfer procedure and there are no scars. Fat transfer consists of two steps. Fat is harvested through a super “mini” liposuction, so to speak, from different areas of the body including the abdomen, lateral thighs or knees and then processed and transferred to the face, resulting in a more full and youthful face. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and/or light IV Sedation and recovery time is usually only a few days.

  • Women and Men
  • Ages 18 to 65 (older if healthy)
  • Non-smokers
  • Generally in good health
  • Desires a more youthful face

Lip AugmentationThe shape, fullness, and outline of the lips is often one of most important features to a woman when it comes to her face. Although the aging process will alter the look and appeal of the lips making them thinner, fortunately, there are a few different options available to help meet your desired goals. We will be happy to consult with you privately to help you find the type of lip filler that is best for you.

BreastsBreast Augmentation, Breast Lift, and Breast Reduction.

Breasts Procedures

Breast AugmentationBreast augmentation can be used to correct volume loss or to help balance breast size asymmetries.

More Breast Augmentation Info

For many women, their breasts are one of the most beautiful and noticeable parts of their body.

How a woman feels about her body in this regard is an important part of who she is. Naturally, the breasts can at times be too small for her liking, and push-up bras or other techniques may become burdensome and unsustainable. The chest area changes with age, time, and with other factors such as weight gain and pregnancy. Breast augmentation can be used to correct volume loss or to help balance breast size asymmetries.

A breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to add volume to your breasts for a more full, youthful appearance. Volume in and around the breast is created by placing FDA-approved implants behind your natural breast tissue or chest muscle. These implants are made of either saline (salt water) or silicone gel.

This procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting with IV sedation and local anesthesia. It typically takes no more than 45 minutes, and the incision is less than 1 inch long and hidden in the breast crease or along the areola border. Recovery is usually no more than a few days, with the return to normal activity in a week.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Women
  • Age 18 to 65
  • Non-smokers
  • Generally in good physical health
  • Desire aesthetic enhancement of the breast
  • Desire augmentation or more fullness

MAKING THE DECISION

There’s no doubt that changing your breasts can be a big decision and sometimes an emotional one. This decision is something to be taken seriously and not lightly. Choosing the wrong surgeon or a wrong/insufficient procedure can leave any patient with a bad cosmetic surgery experience that can last a long time. With the massive number of advertisements and options coming from the media and the culture, an in-person consultation is the best way to get your questions answered and alleviate any concerns you may have.

Schedule your personal consultation and meet with our certified, professional physicians and staff and get all of your questions and concerns answered.

Breast LiftA breast lift is a procedure that essentially raises the breast, significantly reversing the effects of age, pregnancy, etc. The results are a more full, rounded, and youthful look.

More Breast Lift Info

Many women aren’t actually driven by a desire to have “perfect breasts”, but simply want their former breasts back.

DO I NEED A BREAST LIFT WITH IMPLANTS OR CAN I GET DESIRED RESULTS WITH A BREAST LIFT ALONE?

At times a breast lift alone will achieve the desired result, and at other times it is not enough. It may be that the breasts have enough volume, but the way the breast tissue is distributed may have changed over time. The exact shape, position, and volume of the breast pre-surgery will significantly determine the answer to these questions. Even in cases where no breast tissue has been lost, naturally, gravity tends to make the breast appear lower.

To achieve the desired result, a breast augmentation may be recommended to create volume in and around the breast by placing FDA-approved implants behind your natural breast tissue or chest muscle. These implants are made of either saline (salt water) or silicone gel.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Women
  • Ages 18 to 65
  • Non-smokers
  • Desire aesthetic enhancement of the breast
  • Desires augmentation, lift or reduction of the breast

Breast ReductionExcess breast tissue is removed (sometimes along with liposuction, when and where applicable), and the skin and nipple are repositioned to allow your breast to be more proportional to your body in both shape and size.

More Breast Reduction Info

Every woman is given breasts with a certain beauty, and potentially any woman should be able to feel good about the breasts she has. Many times women with already big enough breasts or those women who have had children experience an unsatisfying increase in breast size that they cannot change or reverse on their own. Breasts that are too large for the body may interfere with daily activities, cause back, neck, and shoulder pain, and at times make a woman feel highly self-conscious. Naturally large breasts can also be difficult to assess for lumps or masses, thus making cancer detection much more difficult either for the patient or the physician.

Otherwise known as mammoplasty, the excess breast tissue is removed (sometimes along with liposuction, when and where applicable), and the skin and nipple are repositioned to allow your breast to be more proportional to your body in both shape and size. In some cases, depending on your specific anatomy, a breast lift can also be performed along with a breast reduction for increased contouring.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Women
  • Age 18 to 65 (or older if healthy)
  • Non-smokers
  • Desire aesthetic enhancement of the breast
  • Desires augmentation, lift or reduction of the breast

Body & AbdomenLiposuction, Tummy Tuck, Body Lift, Arm Lift, BodyTite, FaceTite, & AccuTite.

Body & Abdomen Procedures

LiposuctionLiposuction removes certain amounts of fatty tissue from isolated areas that cannot otherwise be changed, leaving the treated part of your body with a more rounded and contoured look.

More Liposuction Info

Liposuction is one of the most popular and requested procedures in cosmetic surgery. Many people are looking for some way to improve the way they look. When diet and exercise alone does not work, liposuction may be an option*.

Liposuction removes certain amounts of fatty tissue from isolated areas that cannot otherwise be changed, leaving the treated part of your body with a more rounded and contoured look*.

Often performed in conjunction with liposculpting, commonly treated areas are the hips, flanks, thighs, abdomen, knees, ankles, arms and neck.

While Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure, liposculpting is a method of body contouring that is practiced in tandem with the procedure in order to achieve certain desired results*. VASERlipo is the latest technique, a minimally invasive ultrasound technology that can remove fat from many areas of the body. Fayetteville Surgical Arts uses these kinds of leading- edge technologies to remove excess fat in unwanted areas and contour certain areas of your body into a more desired shape and appearance*.

* Results may vary

WHAT TO CONSIDER?

The most important considerations are your surgeon, factors specific to your particular body, your goals, and an awareness of the common misconceptions surrounding Liposuction in the culture. Factors more specific to your body and lifestyle are: your general physical condition, skin elasticity, genetic makeup, diet and exercise habits, and smoking and alcohol consumption if any. Although many cosmetic surgeons do know how to perform Liposuction, the length of experience and rate of success of the particular surgeon you choose is especially important.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Men or Women
  • Age 21 to 65
  • Non-smoker
  • Generally in good health
  • Desires aesthetic enhancement of the body
  • Desires restoration of a more youthful contour using liposculpting

Tummy TuckA Tummy Tuck, also known as an Abdominoplasty, is the procedure that may be needed to help with loose sagging skin or excess skin.

More Tummy Tuck Info

It’s important to feel good about the way you look. Especially regarding the tummy area, many people work hard to stay in shape, remain athletic, and feel good about the clothes they wear every day. Putting forth this effort requires discipline and consistent execution, expecting to be rewarded for the effort they put in. At the same time, whether due to age, genetics, after-childbirth effects, or the results from another procedure, sometimes it can seem like there is no way to reverse or control on your own the increased volume. Sagging skin, excess skin, or loss of skin tone call all be contributing factors.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The doctor will make an incision below the bikini line. Next the excess fat is removed with liposuction, the abdominal muscles are tightened if needed, and the remaining skin is repositioned (including the belly button, if and where needed). The standard incision for the tummy tuck procedure travels across the stomach horizontally from hip to hip, located just beneath the underwear or bathing suit line. In some cases from time to time, it may be best for patients to have a small inverted “T” incision that extends vertically up the center of the stomach.

Our surgeons use refined techniques to create significantly smaller scars compared to the traditional Tummy Tuck. They also encourage liposculpting with VASERlipo ultrasound technology to give patients the best results possible*. When and where effective, the surgeons will perform liposuction along with the Tummy Tuck in order to precisely sculpt and contour the waist, lower back, and to flatten the abdomen. Some surgeons do not combine abdominal liposuction with a Tummy Tuck, but here at Fayetteville Surgical Arts it is recommended because it results in a more contoured abdomen*.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Men or Women
  • Ages 25 to 65
  • Non-smokers
  • Generally in good health
  • Desire a flatter stomach, stronger abdominal muscles and sculpted waistline.

Body LiftA body lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure to raise and reshape unsightly, sagging body contours.

More Body Lift Info

During the aging process and/or after significant weight loss, your skin loses its elasticity, causing the mid-section to lose its natural shape and firmness. This procedure is designed to remove loose skin and related fat deposits, thus, providing a more youthful appearance. A body lift can be applied to the lower torso and upper legs including the abdomen (tummy tuck), waist, inner/outer thighs, buttocks and hips. Liposuction may also be completed in conjunction with a body lift if indicated. Patients who have had a gastric bypass or other weight loss procedure often desire a body lift to remove the excess skin. If you have lost a significant amount of weight, you should expect to have at least 2-3 separate cosmetic surgery procedures to address the problems that result from such a major change in your physique. Our ultimate goal is your satisfaction with your appearance and your experience at Fayetteville Surgical Arts. We will listen first to your aesthetic goals before we recommend any surgical or non-surgical options to help you reach those goals. We aim to improve your natural appearance, with no obvious signs of surgery. You should expect, though, that procedures done to remove significant excess skin will result in scarring. Through meticulous attention to detail, we’ll hide all scars whenever possible and use minimally invasive techniques to give you the best result with the least amount of down time.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Women and Men at or near ideal body weight
  • Women and Men who have had gastric bypass or Lap-Band surgery
  • Age 25 to 55
  • Non-smokers
  • Generally in good health
  • Desires aesthetic enhancement to remove loose skin in areas such as the lower torso and upper legs including the abdomen, waist, inner/outer thighs, buttocks, and/or hips

Arm LiftAn arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves removing loose or sagging skin, and commonly also liposuction to remove any excess fat deposits.

More Arm Lift Info

After achieving a weight loss goal, or sometimes through the course of aging, patients are left with loose skin and stubborn pockets of fat in the upper arm area. Most affected patients would avoid wearing sleeveless shirts and may have trouble wearing shirts with fitted sleeves. They may also avoid recreational activities that would involve movement where the appearance of their arms would be visible.

Afterwards, the patient will have a more youthful appearance and will be able to resume normal activity without any movement or clothing restrictions. After an arm lift, your arms will be tone and slim*. The goal of an arm lift is to remove excess skin in an area that is completely exposed, scarring is unavoidable. For most patients, this is an acceptable consequence for getting rid of the excess skin.

*results may vary

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Women and Men at or near ideal body weight
  • Women and Men who have achieved significant weight loss
  • Age 18 to 75
  • Generally in good health

BodyTite, FaceTite, AccuTiteBodyTite, FaceTite, and AccuTite are advanced, effective, and safe procedures to reduce fat and tighten skin at the same time, virtually anywhere on the face or body. These procedures are minimally invasive, yet they produce dramatic improvement in skin laxity, comparable to a surgical facelift or body lift but without the downtime and scars.

More BodyTite, FaceTite, AccuTite Info

Sometimes stubborn areas of fat remain, despite our efforts to exercise and eat a healthy diet. And as we age, or if we lose a significant amount of weight, our skin becomes saggy and wrinkly. You can now address these common problems without surgery.

These procedures are minimally invasive, yet they produce dramatic improvement in skin laxity, comparable to a surgical facelift or body lift but without the downtime and scars.

BodyTite and FaceTite use radio-frequency assisted lipolysis (RFAL™) technology, which offers improved technical and aesthetic benefits compared to traditional liposuction or even surgical lifts. Treatment can be precisely targeted to very small areas such as under or above the eyes, or it can produce consistent results over larger areas of the body. The procedure is performed under light sedation or anesthesia.

FaceTite can be used to tighten skin on any area of the face or neck, such as jowls, double chin, and deep wrinkles. BodyTite can be used to tighten and contour the arms, chest, abdomen, buttocks, inner and outer thighs, and knees. AccuTite can be used on much smaller areas including the face, neck, jowls, under and above the eyes, around the mouth, and the labia. Each of these areas is considered a treatment “zone.” Treatment takes about 15 minutes per zone, and multiple zones can be treated in a single visit. Results are visible immediately and continue to improve up to a year after treatment. Best results are noticeable after about 6 months. There is little to no downtime following a FaceTite or AccuTite procedure. You can go home immediately and resume normal activities right away. Downtime after a BodyTite procedure can be as little as 1 or 2 days or up to 10 days, depending on the treatment area(s).

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Women and Men
  • Ages 30 – 60s (older if you are healthy)
  • Non-smoker
  • Generally in good health
  • Desires to reduce stubborn fat without the result of sagging skin

Thigh LiftA thigh lift, or thighplasty, addresses inner or outer thighs that can sometimes hang excessively and with a great deal of loose skin.

More Thigh Lift Info

As we age, the combined effects of gravity, surgeries, fluctuations in weight, and loss of skin elasticity contribute to loss of tone in the thighs. Saggy or flabby thighs, for any reason, can negatively affect the way you feel about yourself. If diet and exercise don’t help, it’s easy to give up.

You may tell yourself 'this is the way that it is,' thinking there are no other options. Fortunately, with modern liposuction and body contouring techniques, there are other options. In cases such as bariatric surgery or accelerated aging, liposuction alone will increase loose skin making the thighs look worse.

In these cases, a thigh lift is a better option. It combines liposuction (when needed), removal of excess skin, and tightening of loose skin. If liposuction is needed it can be used to address stubborn fat deposits in the outer and inner thighs. An in-person consultation with our cosmetic surgeons will help you decide whether or not a thigh lift is right for you.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Women and Men
  • Ages 18 to 65 (older if healthy)
  • Non-smokers
  • Generally in good health
  • Desires to reduce sagging or flabby appearance of the thighs

LabiaplastyA labiaplasty is an outpatient surgery that reduces excess labial tissue for restoring natural contours, thus giving you a more youthful-looking labia.

More Labiaplasty Info

While the act of vaginal childbirth is miraculous, it can leave lasting effects long after you’ve brought home your little bundle of joy. During pregnancy and labor, your labia can expand and become asymmetric, elongated, and/or darkly pigmented. In other cases, some women are born with large, irregular or asymmetrical labia minora (the inner lips). Your vagina can also simply stretch over time, making sexual intercourse unsatisfying. In some cases, there are aesthetic concerns that were present even without pregnancy. The same techniques provide the same level of results and patient satisfaction.

Labiaplasty can be done under a local anesthetic and takes about an hour. The procedure is quite tolerable for most women, and there is little to no pain. The sutures simply dissolve, and a small amount of swelling may remain for a time, between two to four weeks. The scarring is almost non-existent in this area, and a woman can resume full activity, including sexual intercourse, about a month of recovery after the procedure.

Naturally, reshaping requests of the labia vary by one’s specific anatomy and particular needs. Most commonly, however, the labia minora are simply trimmed to a smaller size. The outer labia can be filled with your own fat to provide a more youthful look. This procedure is a relatively quick one, with minimal discomfort. While there is a small chance that some sensation may be lost, most of the sexual sensation is located in the clitoral and vaginal areas and will not actually be affected by the surgery.

AccuTite is a new non-surgical option that may be used on the labia to tighten and contour the labial tissue. Vaginal Rejuvenation is a general term that refers to surgical procedures to help tighten and support the vagina and its structures. An in-person consultation is required to determine if a surgical or non-surgical option is right for you.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

  • Women under 65 years of age
  • Non-smokers
  • Generally in good health
  • Desires to improve the appearance of her labia or desires vaginal tightening

VaginoplastyA vaginoplasty is a procedure that aims to "tighten up" a vagina that's become slack or loose from vaginal childbirth or aging.

Reasons patients want a vaginoplasty

After childbirth, women may complain of vaginal laxity, resulting from stretching of tissues and separating of muscles, sometimes to the point that a tampon falls out, and this lack of tone can contribute to sexual dysfunction.

What does a vaginoplasty do?

A vaginoplasty brings the separated muscles together, and the extra mucosa skin from the back side of the vagina is removed. The external skin can also be removed for a more aesthetic appearance.

Anesthesia for a vaginoplasty

While a vaginoplasty can be done under local anesthesia, many opt to have it done under general anesthesia.

Vaginoplasty procedure

Once the amount of tightening to be done is determined, a pie-shape wedge is marked to delineate the extra skin to be removed from inside the vagina. Beneath the skin, the tissues are tightened with strong sutures. Once the vaginal canal has been tightened, the mucosal skin is sutured closed. If there is external skin that protrudes, this can be reduced as well for a more aesthetic result.

Recovering from a vaginoplasty

Patients may have one to two weeks of down time. They may feel a deep ache for the first few days, and there is no tampon use or intercourse for eight weeks. Depending on the amount of tightening performed, some patients may be instructed to use dilators.

What are the results of a vaginoplasty?

This procedure typically results in a tighter vaginal canal, which can help enhance sexual satisfaction.

Vaginal RejuvenationRecent medical advances have given women new hope for significant vaginal rejuvenation through non-invasive techniques. Laser vaginal restoration can help improve vaginal tone and vaginal lubrication which may improve intercourse.

More Vaginal Rejuvenation Info

This procedure also reduces urinary incontinence, often freeing women from the need for extra pads and frequent trips to the restroom.

MonaLisa Touch® and TempSure Vitalia procedures take as little as 5 minutes and can achieve results in just 3 treatments. No anesthesia is need because there is zero to minimal discomfort with no downtime.

  • Annual ExamAn annual well-woman exam is part of your overall health maintenance. This exam is important throughout all phases of a woman’s life. The focus of your exam changes as you mature.

    More Annual Exam Info

A well-woman exam can be divided into four components:

    • A discussion of your health history with your physician
    • A general physical exam, including your weight and blood pressure
    • A breast exam, to check for lumps or fibrocystic changes
    • A pelvic exam, to check your abdomen, pelvis and vagina for any abnormalities

Your physician may perform a pap smear, depending on your age and your health history. It is important to ask questions if there is any information you don’t understand. Your physician may order lab work or additional testing, depending on your exam.

A gynecologic visit focuses on your reproductive organs and your physical health. Your doctor will ask questions about your health and your family’s health. We know that your first gynecology visit can be intimidating and we want you to be as comfortable as possible. We encourage you to ask questions if there is information that you do not understand. Your physician may ask questions about your health that may seem personal or private. It is very important to be open and honest with your physician. The information you provide will help your physician to keep you healthy and know how best to care your individual needs.

During your gynecological visit, you will have a general physical exam. We will check your weight, height, and blood pressure. We will also ask you questions about your health history and whether you have any special concerns. This visit may also include the following:

    • Breast exam: Your physician will check your breasts for any abnormal symptoms, such as lumps or discharge
    • Pelvic exam: Your physician will examine your abdomen, pelvis, and vagina
    • Pap test: A Pap smear takes a sample of the cells of the cervix, which is the opening of the uterus; This test is used to find abnormalities on the cervix that could lead to cancer; Your physician will discuss when it will be appropriate to have regular Pap tests

Based on the results and findings of your first exam, your physician may make recommendations for any appropriate follow-up care.

  • ContraceptionBirth control, also known as contraception, is designed to prevent pregnancy. Birth control methods may work in a number of different ways: Preventing sperm from getting to the eggs.

Birth ControlBirth control pills contain hormones that prevent ovulation.

    More Birth Control Info

These hormones also cause other changes in the body that help prevent pregnancy. The mucus in the cervix thickens, which makes it hard for sperm to enter the uterus. The lining of the uterus thins, making it less likely that a fertilized egg can attach to it. With typical use, about 8 in 100 women (8%) will become pregnant during the first year of using this method. When used perfectly, 1 in 100 women will become pregnant during the first year. To be effective at preventing pregnancy, the pill must be taken every day at the same time each day. There are two basic types of birth control pills: 1) combination pills, which contain the hormones estrogen and progestin, and 2) progestin-only pills.

Depo ProveraDepo-Provera is a birth control method for women, made up of a hormone similar to progesterone and given as an injection by a doctor into the woman’s arm or buttocks.

    More Depo Provera Info

Each shot provides protection against pregnancy for up to 14 weeks, but the shot must be received once every 12 weeks to remain fully protected. Birth control with Depo-Provera begins immediately after the first shot if given within the first five days of your menstrual period. Depo-Provera is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy and does not prevent spreading of STDs.

IUDAn IUD is a small, T-shaped plastic device that is wrapped in copper or contains hormones.

    More IUD Info

IUDs prevent fertilization of eggs by damaging or killing sperm. IUDs also affect the uterine lining (where a fertilized egg would implant and grow). IUDs are among the most effective forms of birth control available.

MirenaMirena is intrauterine birth control that’s over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

    More Mirena Info

It’s made of soft, flexible plastic and placed into your uterus by your healthcare provider during a routine office visit. Mirena releases small amounts of hormone directly into the uterus and lasts as long as YOU want, for up to 5 years. It is important to note that Mirena is recommended for women who have had a child. Mirena does not protect against HIV or STDs.

ParaGardParaGard has been available to women for over 20 years in the U.S. It’s the only reversible birth control that’s more than 99% effective and 100% hormone free.

    More ParaGard Info

In fact,it’s one of the most effective forms of birth control available, and it lasts as long as you want: two, five, even up to 10 years. Unlike many other forms of birth control, ParaGard won’t interfere with your natural menstrual cycle. Generally your doctor can place ParaGard within minutes during a routine office visit and your doctor can remove it at any time if you decide you want to have children later; you can even start trying to get pregnant that same day.

  • Management of Abnormal Pap TestThe Pap test checks for changes in the cervix that may become cancer.

    More Pap Test Info

In women who have regular Pap tests, abnormal changes are almost always caught early. If your Pap results are abnormal, your physician may recommend additional testing such as: a repeat pap smear, HPV testing, or a colposcopy. These tests help us determine whether your results are mildly abnormal or precancerous. Your physician will work with you to find the most appropriate treatment options and help you to develop a plan of care. It is important to follow treatment recommendations made by your physician, as our goal is to keep you as healthy as possible.

    Colposcopy

Your physician may perform a colposcopy if your Pap test results show abnormalities that may lead to a more serious condition. A colposcopy provides additional information about abnormal changes in the cervix, and can be used to assess problems such as abnormal bleeding, cervical polyps, or cervicitis. Your physician will apply a mild solution to your cervix that allows easier visualization of the abnormal area(s). Then, she will use a magnifying device called a colposcope to look at your cervix more closely. A biopsy of any abnormal area(s) found on the cervix may be taken during the exam. This involves taking a small tissue sample and sending it to the lab for analysis. Your physician may also take a sample of the cells from the canal of the cervix. This is called an ECC (endocervical curettage). We will develop your plan of care once we receive your lab results. During the exam, you will lie on your back on a table while a moveable x-ray arm passes over your hip and spine. You will not feel any discomfort during the procedure and it will take about 30 minutes to complete. A computer will compare your results to others whose age, sex, and racial background are similar to yours. Your doctor will interpret the results and make the appropriate recommendation.

    Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)

Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) is a safe method to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix called dysplasia, which might otherwise progress to cancer. A colposcope allows the physician to see a magnified view of the dysplasia on the cervix. A local anesthetic is used to numb the cervix and the abnormal portion of the cervix is removed with a thin wire loop carrying a small electrical current. The tissue that is removed is sent to the lab for analysis. You may feel some cramping during the procedure, but the procedure takes only a few minutes. You will have some vaginal discharge and light bleeding after the procedure. This is normal. Usually, the cervix will heal completely in about one month.

  • PMSPMS is a collection of emotional symptoms (with or without physical symptoms) related to a woman’s menstrual cycle.

    More PMS Info

While most women of child-bearing age (up to 85%) report having experienced physical symptoms related to normal ovulatory function, such as bloating or breast tenderness, medical definitions of PMS are limited to a consistent pattern of emotional and physical symptoms occurring only during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle that are of “sufficient severity to interfere with some aspects of life.” In particular, emotional symptoms must be present consistently to diagnose PMS. The specific emotional and physical symptoms attributable to PMS vary from woman to woman, but each individual woman’s pattern of symptoms is predictable, occurs consistently during the ten days prior to menses, and vanishes either shortly before or shortly after the start of menstrual flow.

Two to ten percent of women have significant premenstrual symptoms that are separate from the normal discomfort associated with menstruation in healthy women. Culturally, the abbreviation PMS is widely understood in English-speaking countries to refer to difficulties associated with menses, and the abbreviation is used frequently even in casual and colloquial settings, without regard to medical rigor. In these contexts, the syndrome is rarely referred to without abbreviation, and the connotations of the reference are frequently more broad than the clinical definition.

  • STDsSexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by infections that are passed from one person to another during sexual contact.

    More STDs Info

These infections often do not cause any symptoms. Medically, infections are only called diseases when they cause symptoms. That is why STDs are also called “sexually transmitted infections.” But it’s very common for people to use the terms “sexually transmitted diseases” or “STDs,” even when there are no signs of disease.

There are many kinds of sexually transmitted diseases and infections. And they are very common — more than half of all of us will get one at some time in our lives. The good news is we can protect ourselves and each other from STDs. Practicing safer sex allows you to reduce your risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases. And if you’ve done anything that puts you at risk of infection, getting tested allows you to get any treatments you may need. If you are sexually active, you should get tested for HIV, chlamydia, or gonorrhea, three dangerous STDs, with The Check.

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormonal disorder than can cause irregular periods, acne, difficulty becoming pregnant, obesity, or excess hair on the face and body, also known as hirsutism.

    More PCOS Info

In order to diagnose PCOS, your physician will do a thorough exam that may include lab work, an ultrasound exam, and a work-up of your personal health history. This is a chronic condition that can be treated with lifestyle changes, such as altering your diet, weight loss, and regular exercise and/or medication. Your physician will discuss different treatment options and help you to develop a long-term plan of care.

  • EndometriosisEndometrial tissue, or the tissue that makes up the lining of the uterus, can sometimes grow in other areas of the pelvis. This is called endometriosis.

    More Endometriosis Info

This tissue responds to normal hormonal changes and bleeds like the lining of the uterus. This can cause adhesions, chronic pelvic pain and or painful periods. Sometimes, endometriosis can be a cause of infertility.

Symptoms of endometriosis can be chronic and may range from very mild to very severe. Treatment options range from medication to surgery or both. Your physician will work with you to find the most appropriate treatment options and help you to develop a plan of care.

  • FibroidsUterine fibroids, or leiomyoma, are growths associated with the uterine lining or muscle that can cause abnormal bleeding, painful periods, pelvic pain, or infertility.

    More Fibroids Info

Fibroids can be detected by a pelvic exam or ultrasound. Some fibroids are small and do not require treatment. However, depending on the size, location, and number of fibroids in the uterus, medication and or surgery may become necessary. Your physician will recommend treatment options based on your symptoms and physical condition.

  • Menopausal ManagementMenopause generally requires no medical treatment. Instead, treatments focus on relieving your signs and symptoms and preventing or managing chronic conditions that may occur with aging.

    More Menopausal Management Info

    Treatments may include:

    • Hormone therapy. Estrogen therapy remains, by far, the most effective treatment option for relieving menopausal hot flashes. Depending on your personal and family medical history, your doctor may recommend estrogen in the lowest dose needed to provide symptom relief for you. If you still have your uterus, you’ll need progestin in addition to estrogen. Estrogen also helps prevent bone loss. And hormone therapy may benefit your heart if started within five years after your last menstrual period.
    • Vaginal estrogen. To relieve vaginal dryness, estrogen can be administered directly to the vagina using a vaginal tablet, ring or cream. This treatment releases just a small amount of estrogen, which is absorbed by the vaginal tissue. It can help relieve vaginal dryness, discomfort with intercourse and some urinary symptoms.
    • Low-dose antidepressants. Certain antidepressants related to the class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may decrease menopausal hot flashes. A low-dose antidepressant for management of hot flashes may be useful for women who can’t take estrogen for health reasons or for women who need an antidepressant for a mood disorder.
    • Gabapentin (Neurontin). Gabapentin is approved to treat seizures, but it has also been shown to help reduce hot flashes. This drug is useful in women who can’t use estrogen therapy and in those who also have migraines.
    • Medications to prevent or treat osteoporosis. Depending on individual needs, doctors may recommend medication to prevent or treat osteoporosis. Several medications are available that help reduce bone loss and risk of fractures.

Before deciding on any form of treatment, talk with your doctor about your options and the risks and benefits involved with each. Review your options yearly, as your needs and treatment options may change.

  • Bio-identical Hormone Replacement TherapyWhen going through menopause many women find they can no longer deal with the hot flashes, night sweats, sleeplessness, irritability, mood swings and other menopausal symptoms that come with a vengeance.

More Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Info

This symptoms occur because of the estrogen and progesterone depletion in the body. In order to get the symptoms under control and hormone levels back to normal, our providers prefer using bio-identical hormone replacement therapy.

The interest in a more natural approach to hormone therapy has focused attention on bio-identical hormones — hormones that are identical in molecular structure to the hormones women make in their bodies. They’re not found in this form in nature but are made, or synthesized, from a plant chemical extracted from yams and soy. Bio-identical estrogens are 17 beta-estradiol, estrone, and estriol. (Estradiol is the form of estrogen that decreases at menopause.) Bio-identical progesterone is simply progesterone. It’s micronized (finely ground) in the laboratory for better absorption in the body.

Bio-identical hormone therapy is often called “natural hormone therapy” because bio-identical hormones act in the body just like the hormones we produce. Technically, the body can’t distinguish bio-identical hormones from the ones your ovaries produce.

Before deciding on any form of treatment, Dr. Mendes or provider will talk to you about your options and the risks and benefits involved with each. She will review your options yearly, as your needs and treatment options may change.

  • OsteoporosisOsteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or even mild stresses like bending over or coughing can cause a fracture.

    More Osteoporosis Info

Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine. Bone is living tissue, which is constantly being absorbed and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the removal of old bone. Medications, healthy diet and weight-bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss or strengthen already weak bones.

    DXA Scan

Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the preferred technique for measuring bone mineral density (BMD). DXA has also been called dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DEXA. DXA is relatively easy to perform and the amount of radiation exposure is low. A DXA scanner is a machine that produces 2 X-ray beams, each with different energy levels. One beam is high energy while the other is low energy. The amount of X-rays that pass through the bone is measured for each beam. This will vary depending on the thickness of the bone. Based on the difference between the two beams, the bone density can be measured. At present, DXA scanning focuses on two main areas — the hip and spine. Although osteoporosis involves the whole body, measurements of BMD at one site can be predictive of fractures at other sites. Scanning generally takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete and is painless.

  • Pelvic UltrasoundUltrasounds, also called sonograms, are exams that use sound waves to create images of internal organs.

    More Pelvic Ultrasound Info

Ultrasounds are done to assess possible gynecological medical conditions, such as pelvic/abdominal masses, fibroids, and to determine possible causes for pelvic pain and or abnormal bleeding. During pregnancy, ultrasounds are used to assess the well-being of the fetus. Typical obstetric ultrasounds can show the placement of the fetus and the placenta, the number of fetuses, the heart rate, growth, breathing, and movement of the fetus, and the estimated gestational age of the fetus.

There are two types of ultrasounds: transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasounds. A transabdominal ultrasound is performed by rolling a device called a transducer back and forth across the abdomen. A transvaginal ultrasound is performed by inserting a wand-shaped transducer into the vagina.

  • Gynecology SurgeryDr Mendes specializes in evaluating and treating women who have a wide range of noncancerous (benign) gynecologic conditions, including heavy menstrual periods (menorrhagia), irregular menstrual periods (metrorrhagia), pelvic pain, endometriosis and ovarian cysts.

    More GYN Surgery Info

Hysterectomy - There are 3 types of hysterectomy vaginal hysterectomy; abdominal hysterectomy and laparascopic hysterectomy.

    • Vaginal Hysterectomy - In a vaginal hysterectomy, the uterus is removed through the vagina. Because the incision is inside the vagina, the healing time may be shorter than with abdominal surgery. There may be less pain during recovery. Vaginal hysterectomy causes fewer complications than the other types of hysterectomy and is a very safe way to remove the uterus. It also is associated with a shorter hospital stay and a faster return to normal activities than abdominal hysterectomy.

    • Abdominal Hysterectomy - In an abdominal hysterectomy, the surgeon makes an incision through the skin and tissue in the lower abdomen to reach the uterus. This type of hysterectomy gives the surgeon a good view of the uterus and other organs during the operation. This procedure may be chosen if you have large tumors or if cancer may be present. Abdominal hysterectomy may require a longer healing time than vaginal or laparoscopic surgery, and it usually requires a longer hospital stay.

    • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy - In a laparoscopic hysterectomy, a laparoscope is used to guide the surgery. A laparoscope is a thin, lighted tube that is inserted into the abdomen through a small incision in or around the navel. It allows the surgeon to see the pelvic organs on a screen. Additional small incisions are made in the abdomen for other instruments used in the surgery. In a total laparoscopic hysterectomy, the uterus is detached from inside the body and then removed in small pieces through the incisions or through the vagina. In a laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy, the uterus is removed through the vagina, and the laparoscope is used to guide the procedure. In a robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy, the surgeon uses a robot attached to the instruments to assist in the surgery.

    • Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation - A tubal ligation “getting your tubes tied” is considered a permanent method of birth control. The fallopian tubes are cut or blocked, which prevents pregnancy by blocking the egg’s path to the sperm and uterus. Laparoscopy makes it possible to see and do the surgery through small incisions in the abdomen.

For a laparoscopic tubal ligation, the surgeon makes two small incisions-one in or just below the belly button (navel) and one at the upper edge of the pubic hair. The abdominal cavity, where the reproductive organs are, is inflated with air or a harmless gas so that the surgeon can see and avoid injuring abdominal organs or the inside of the abdomen.

The surgeon inserts a thin, lighted viewing tube (laparoscope) through the incision. The laparoscope has a lens that magnifies what the surgeon is viewing. The instrument that the surgeon uses to cut (ligate) the tubes may be inserted alongside the laparoscope or through the incision just above the pubic hair. The surgeon looks through the laparoscope while moving this instrument to get the tubes cut in the correct location.

    • Essure Tubal Occlusion - While both Essure and tubal ligation, or “getting your tubes tied” offer women a permanent birth control solution, the Essure procedure is a quick surgery-free procedure that does not require general anesthesia and has a faster recovery time. During this quick procedure, a doctor places the soft, flexible Essure inserts into your fallopian tubes through the natural pathways of your vagina and cervix, so no incision is necessary. The inserts are made of the same material that is used and proven safe in heart stents and other medical devices.

Over the next three months, your body works with the inserts to form a natural barrier in your fallopian tubes. This barrier prevents sperm from reaching the egg so that pregnancy cannot occur. During this three-month period, you must continue to use another form of birth control.

    • Endometrial Ablation - Endometrial ablation is used to treat many causes of heavy bleeding. In most cases, women with heavy bleeding are treated first with medication. If heavy bleeding cannot be controlled with medication, endometrial ablation may be used.

Endometrial ablation destroys a thin layer of the lining of the uterus and stops the menstrual flow in many women. In some women, menstrual bleeding does not stop but is reduced to normal or lighter levels. If ablation does not control heavy bleeding, further treatment or surgery may be required.

  • HCG DietSome of our patients would prefer a diet to surgical options. hCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, a hormone naturally produced by the placenta in pregnant women that almost completely controls the metabolic function through the hypothalamus throughout the pregnancy. Contrary to popular belief however, the hCG used in hCG diet protocols is a variation of the hCG form used for fertility treatments, and in a much smaller dose. All hCG used for medical purposes is natural, but created in laboratories from sterile cells.

    How does it work?

The diet itself works by combination of 2 factors: reduction in calories (diet) combined with hCG, which aids in the weight loss by preventing your body from going into “starvation mode” where your body works to store as much fat as possible. The combination of the two factors means your body will begin burning off the unnecessary stored fat at a rapid but safe pace! During the course of the treatment, you will receive daily injections of hCG and will follow a strict diet. You should drink plenty of decaffeinated liquids and be sure to get plenty of fiber in your diet. Daily exercise, such as walking or stretching, is encouraged. If you are seriously overweight or have not been active in a long time, starting slowly with exercise is extremely important to avoid injuries that could make it more difficult to develop active lifestyle habits. However, exercise is not that necessary until maintenance. The diet lasts 26 or 40 days, depending on how much weight you want to lose. If you want to lose more weight after the 40 days, the diet cycle can be done again after a short break.

How fast will I lose weight?

It is typical for hCG protocol dieters to lose somewhere around 0.5lb-1.5lbs per day and around 40lbs in 40 days! That is not an exaggeration. Because hCG targets only your extra stored fat, your water and muscle will remain untouched. Because fat storage triggers the release of certain hormones that increase blood pressure and blood sugar, as you melt away the fat stores, you should begin to notice a difference in your health and well being, not just your clothing size.

    How "strict" is this diet?

Very strict. All fat and calories are closely monitored. Everything containing fat/calories from food to bath products is monitored. During the dietary period, even standard lotions are discouraged, as they can slow your weight loss (your body absorbs the fat in your lotion, for example). We want you to lose as much weight as is reasonably possible during your hCG diet period. Close monitoring of all of things going into and onto your body matter. We’ll be here to help you figure out what is what.
